Morgantown W.Va. — To help the University reduce energy consumption and costs, computers that are supported by Information Technology Services will be put in sleep mode after a period of inactivity starting July 25.
The time threshold depends on whether the inactivity occurs during core business hours (6 a.m.-6 p.m.) or during off-peak hours (6 p.m.-6 a.m.) This does NOT affect computers that are actively being used.
Monitors will be shut off after a designated period of inactivity, and the computer will be put into power-saving or “sleep” mode after a longer period.
The new power management plans align with a Facilities Management initiative to reduce overall electricity costs across campus by 10 percent.
ITS also will work with any campus or college IT unit that wants to implement power management to better control consumption.
