NRCCE hosts Shanxi energy delegation

Morgantown, W.Va. – After visiting China in April and meeting with officials from the Shanxi International Energy Group, Dr. Richard Bajura, director of the National Research Center for Coal and Energy and Dr. Qingun Sun, US-China Energy Center associate director, were pleased to host SIEG executives at the NRCCE on June 17, 2015.

The US-CEC is a program of the NRCCE, West Virginia University Extension, and the Davis College of Agricultural, Natural Resources and Design.

While here, the group was able to exchange ideas about energy and higher education. They also heard a presentation by Drs. Liu Xingbo and Ismail Celik about fuels cells and materials research being conducted on campus. Both are faculty in WVU’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department.

In addition, the executives toured the Advanced Virtual Energy Simulation Training And Research (AVESTAR) Center, which simulates integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) coal-fired power plants and is managed by Dr. Richard Turton.

At the NRCCE, the Chinese SIEG executives toured the Advanced Virtual Energy Simulation Training And Research (AVESTAR) Center, which simulates integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) coal-fired power plants and is managed by Dr. Richard Turton.

The simulator, originally funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), shows how IGCC with carbon capture processes work. IGCCs, although more complicated than conventional power plants, could well play an important role for the U.S.’ future energy supply, according to the DOE. The power plant simulation process also can be used to train future operators.

The simulator illustrates a number of different conditions that users may encounter and allows them to practice before ever entering a functioning power plant. The visiting executives watched as Turton demonstrated how the simulator worked, including providing examples of some emergency situations.

After the NRCCE visit the group adjourned to Blamey House for a signing ceremony and dinner with President Gee.
